EssZed are a band who disappeared from the NY grunge/rock scene in the aftermath of 9/11. Those few fans that still remember them will know there was some mystery about how and why they vanished. Some say they were somehow caught in the collapse of the World Trade Center, perhaps visiting a friend working there, or simply passing by when it all came down. Others say the band chose 9/11 as an opportunity to quietly disband and vanish hoping to take advantage of all the 9/11 conspiracy theories going around and leave behind some kind of buzz. Whatever the truth, the fact is for the brief time they were around they wrote – in my humble opinion – some excellent songs. Below are ten tracks I managed to rip from the only CD they ever recorded. ( I bought a copy at one of their gigs. They were selling them out of the back of their tour van!) Sadly the other four songs on the CD there are scratches on, which means it skips, jumps or freezes on those songs. I really should’ve backed up this CD ages ago.

A Time Rider – By EssZed ‘TimeRider’ was the track that was the inspirational source of the title for this series of books. Listen to the lyrics and you’ll see how much it inspired the series of books!
Church of Me – By EssZed Quite damned catchy this. Can’t quite think who it reminds me of. Primal Scream?
Rainbow of Life – By EssZed Good punchy, commercial rock track. I’d imagine it’s the obligatory radio-friendly single from the album?
She Said Yeah – By EssZed One of my faves…kind of reminds me a bit of the Dandy Warholes/Blur. Love the lyrics – doom-mongering with a slice of humour.
Look at all the Sheeple – By EssZed I think this might be my favourite. I love the pitch-shifted voice towards the end. So funny. Makes a great anti-Christmas song!
God Honestly – By EssZed Very catchy. Another possible single off their one and only album. Ah well.
Life and Death – By EssZed A very melancholic track. I get the feeling the singer (I think his name was Karl?) was on a real downer when he wrote this.
A Perfect Man – By EssZed I haven’t a clue what this song is about, but it’s well mellow.
Rain on Me – By EssZedBack to SchoolAll Run Dry – By EssZed Kinda funky reggae/folk thing going on here. Always loved the fiddle playing at the end.
Back to School Listen to the lyrics. Reminded me of my school days.
All Run Dry – By EssZed A doom-n-gloom song about the end of the world.
(Please note: at busy times of the day, streaming these tracks from this website can result in ‘jittery’ playback. Which can get quite annoying, fast.)
NB: I’m not sure of the copyright issue here. If one of the band is actually alive and happens to get in contact and ask me to take down the tracks, I’ll happily do so. Until then, enjoy!
