TIMERIDERS WINS CHILDRENS BOOK OF YEAR AWARD!
Attended the Calderdale Children’s Book of The Year conference yesterday in the city of Halifax. A wonderful event where I got to meet other authors; Cliff McNish, Tim Bowler, Terence Blacker and Michelle Harrison (who’s real surname is something else, that I’m under instructions NEVER to reveal). In the morning, we each hosted a workshop of 20 12-14 year olds, then had lunch, then a second workshop and then finally everyone assembled in the main conference room for a Q&A.
Then, after that, awards were handed out to those students who’d written the best reviews.
Then….finally the winner was announced.
And MY GOD…it was TimeRiders! I got up from behind the panel desk to collect it, and then promptly disappeared as I tripped over a chair leg and went head over ass. Of course I got a huge roar of good natured laughter from the kids as I bounced straight up and made the whole thing look like a comedy roll. Ahhh the professionalism.
What a moment though, to actually, you know, WIN somthing! Always the bridesmaid, never the bride…that’s always been me. But today, finally I WON.
What a great day. The two workshops were fantastic, the students incredibly well versed in history, and I got to meet some really nice book-loving kids who had enjoyed TimeRiders and had purchased advance copies of Day of the Predator for me to sign for them. I’m guessing, those boys and girls are the first in the UK to get their hands on book 2, so…I really hope they enjoy it.
A special day that was. One I’m going to keep with me in a special little locked room in my memory, to savour for the rest of my life.
