My ‘show’ went down pretty well, by the way. But you know, I really hadn’t realised how BIG the Hay Lit festival is! There are I’d guess a dozen large tented ‘arenas’. Don’t know what the others are like inside, but the one I did my show on was bleedin’ huge; gigantic backdrop projection screen, pounding sound system, enormous stage, and capacity seating for about 600. Standing there with a mic, and an audience of 450 11-12 year old lads and ladies, I got a feeling what it must be like to do stand up at the O2.

HAY FESTIVAL

My ‘show’ went down pretty well, by the way. But you know, I really hadn’t realised how BIG the Hay Lit festival is! There are I’d guess a dozen large tented ‘arenas’. Don’t know what the others are like inside, but the one I did my show on was bleedin’ huge; gigantic backdrop projection screen, pounding sound system, enormous stage, and capacity seating for about 600. Standing there with a mic, and an audience of 450 11-12 year old lads and ladies, I got a feeling what it must be like to do stand up at the O2.
Was I nervous? Oddly…no. I love presenting to a younger audience. Mainly because they’re at that age where they’re not all stressed out trying to look cool and surly. They’re at an age where having fun is simply the most important thing. Which means no shortage of audience interaction. Teen audiences, by contrast are a somewhat more somber affair. (To be fair, I’ve only done one teen gig, so perhaps a little too early to pre-judge all teens) And adults? Sheeesh…they just scare me with their smart-alec grown up sensible questions. Give me a ‘have you ever written about a man’s head exploding whilst out shopping at Tescos’ type question over those more probing grown-up queries about character layers and emotional sub-texts.
No, this was the most fun I’ve ever had. Sort of reminded me of the buzz I used to get on stage when I used to gig, only better, because this time round it was just me and a mic.
By the end of the show, I was soaked through with author-sweat and gasping for air as I did the Q&A. Damned fine way to spend a morning that. I’d do Hay again it they asked me. Hell yeah.
